About Sacramento

Sacramento began in 1839, when Swiss immigrant John Sutter built a fort and trading post called New Helvetia near where the American River meets the Sacramento River. In 1848 gold was discovered at Sutter's sawmill in the foothills, and the gold rush that followed turned the riverside landing into a booming city almost overnight. Sacramento became the capital of California in 1854.

The city was the western end of the Pony Express in 1860, and in 1863 work began here on the Central Pacific Railroad, the western half of the first transcontinental railroad, led by Sacramento merchants known as the Big Four. Their era lives on in Old Sacramento's wooden sidewalks and brick buildings beside the river, in the Leland Stanford Mansion, and in the domed California State Capitol, completed in 1874 and set in a 40-acre park.

Today Sacramento is a city of tree-lined streets and great museums, including the California State Railroad Museum, Sutter's Fort and the Crocker Art Museum, the oldest public art museum in the West. The golden Tower Bridge crosses the river to West Sacramento, the American River Parkway offers 32 miles of trails, and the city's farm-to-fork dining draws on the farms that surround it.

Best seasonMarch to June and September to November; summers are hot and dry, while spring brings blooms along the rivers.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the Capitol, Old Sacramento, the museums and a ride or walk along the American River.
ArrivingSacramento International Airport is about 15 minutes northwest, Amtrak trains stop at the historic Sacramento Valley Station, and Interstates 5 and 80 meet in the city.
