About Modesto

Modesto was founded in 1870 when the Central Pacific Railroad built a station on the plains of the northern San Joaquin Valley. The story goes that the town was to be named for a railroad financier who modestly declined, so it was called Modesto, Spanish for modest. Irrigation from the Tuolumne and Stanislaus rivers turned the surrounding land into some of the richest farmland in the country, famous for almonds, peaches, dairy and wine grapes.

Downtown's landmark is the Modesto Arch, built in 1912 with the motto Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health, celebrating the irrigation that built the city. Nearby stand the Victorian McHenry Mansion, the restored State Theatre and the modern Gallo Center for the Arts, and the city is home to one of the world's largest wine companies, founded here by the Gallo brothers in 1933.

Modesto is also the hometown of filmmaker George Lucas, whose film American Graffiti was inspired by cruising its streets in the early 1960s. The city celebrates that past every June with classic cars during Graffiti Summer, while the Tuolumne River and the McHenry Museum offer quieter ways to explore.

Best seasonMarch to May for orchard blossoms and mild weather, and September to October for harvest season; summers are hot.
Ideal stayOne day for the arch, McHenry Mansion, the Gallo Center and a classic car stroll; add a trip to Yosemite, about two hours east.
ArrivingSacramento International Airport is about 90 minutes north, Amtrak San Joaquins and ACE trains stop in the area, and State Route 99 runs through Modesto.
