About Elk Island National Park

Elk Island National Park protects a patch of the Beaver Hills east of Edmonton, a rolling landscape of aspen woodland, wetlands and small lakes. Fenced since its early years as a refuge for elk, it became central to North American bison conservation, and animals raised here have helped re-establish herds across the continent. It also lies within the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve.

The Yellowhead Highway divides the park into two very different halves. North of the highway, plains bison graze along the parkway and wander through the picnic areas, and visitors often see them from the car. South of the road, a separate herd of wood bison lives in a quieter section with fewer facilities. Astotin Lake is the main hub, with a beach, boat launch and campground, while trails around Tawayik Lake offer easy loops through meadows and beaver ponds. The park even has its own nine-hole course, Elk Island Golf Course.

Day-trippers from Edmonton make up much of the visitor base, and the park suits families, cyclists and anyone keen on wildlife at a relaxed pace. Dusk is the best time for animal sightings and night skies. Nearby, Miquelon Lake Provincial Park, the Strathcona Wilderness Centre and the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village extend a visit.

Best seasonLate spring through early fall for wildlife and trails; winter brings skiing, snowshoeing and dark skies.
Ideal stayA day trip is common, though an overnight at Astotin Lake allows dusk wildlife viewing.
ArrivingMost visitors drive east from Edmonton along the Yellowhead Highway, a short trip from the city.
