About El Tajín

El Tajín is a major pre-Hispanic city in northern Veracruz, near the town of Papantla, that flourished in the Classic and Epiclassic periods. Set in lush hills, it is known for its unique architecture, including niche-decorated pyramids, and for its many ballcourts. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

The Pyramid of the Niches is the site's most famous structure, its tiers covered with deep, square niches that create a striking pattern of light and shadow. The South Ballcourt features carved relief panels depicting ritual scenes. Tajín Chico, a raised area to the north, contains elite residences and buildings with geometric decoration, and the Arroyo Group and the Gran Xicalcoliuhqui, a massive wall in a stepped fret shape, are further highlights. Outside the site entrance, the Voladores perform their dramatic ritual, spinning down from a tall pole.

The nearby town of Papantla is the usual base, with the Papantla zócalo and church at its center and the Monument to the Voladores overlooking the town. Papantla museums and the Hidalgo and Juárez markets showcase local culture and the region's vanilla. Tecolutla, on the Gulf coast, offers beaches within reach. Heat and humidity are high, so mornings are best for exploring the ruins.

Best seasonNovember through April for slightly cooler, drier days; March brings the Cumbre Tajín festival.
Ideal stayOne day for the ruins, plus a night in Papantla to explore the town.
ArrivingMost travelers arrive by bus or car via Poza Rica, which has the nearest airport.
