About Puebla

Puebla, capital of the state of the same name, was founded by the Spanish in the sixteenth century on a high plateau ringed by volcanoes. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, filled with baroque churches, tiled facades and colonial mansions. The city is also one of Mexico's great food capitals, credited with dishes like mole poblano and chiles en nogada.

The Zócalo and cathedral form the heart of the old town, the cathedral's towers among the tallest in Mexico. The Capilla del Rosario, inside the Church of Santo Domingo, is a lavishly gilded baroque chapel. The Biblioteca Palafoxiana is often described as the first public library in the Americas. Museo Amparo holds an excellent collection of pre-Hispanic and colonial art. Antique shops and street markets cluster around Los Sapos, while El Parián sells crafts and sweets. Los Fuertes, on a hill above the center, recall the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The Pasaje Histórico tunnels and a growing mural district add more layers to explore, and the Cuexcomate is a small, quirky geological cone.

Food lovers and architecture enthusiasts could easily fill several days. Cholula, with its massive pyramid, is a short trip west, while Santa María Tonantzintla and San Francisco Acatepec are known for their indigenous baroque churches.

Best seasonOctober through May for dry weather; late summer is the season for chiles en nogada.
Ideal stayThree to four days covers the historic center, museums and a trip to Cholula.
ArrivingTravelers often take a bus from Mexico City; Puebla's airport also has domestic flights.
