About Tamasopo

Tamasopo is a small town in the western Huasteca Potosina, where the mountains begin to give way to warm, green lowlands. Sugarcane fields and tropical forest surround it, and rivers rich in minerals create clear blue pools, making the town a natural base for some of the region's most popular swimming spots.

The Cascada de Tamasopo is the main attraction, a series of falls spilling into wide pools where visitors swim and float in the current. Nearby, Puente de Dios is a striking pool of deep blue water partly enclosed by a rock vault, with a cave passage where light filters in. El Trampolín, as its name suggests, is a favorite for jumping into the river. The town itself is modest, with simple restaurants and lodging. From here, day trips reach the terraced Cascadas de Micos, the boat ride to the Cascada de Tamul, the Nacimiento del Río Huichihuayán and the Huastec ruins of Tamtoc.

Tamasopo suits families and travelers who want swimming and nature rather than sightseeing in towns. Weekends and holidays can be busy with domestic visitors. Ciudad Valles is the nearest city, with more services. The dry season keeps the water at its clearest and bluest.

Best seasonNovember to May, when the water is clearest; rainy months can cloud the rivers.
Ideal stayOne to two days for Tamasopo's pools, longer as a base for the wider Huasteca.
ArrivingTravelers arrive by road, often from Ciudad Valles or the city of San Luis Potosí.
