About Xilitla

Xilitla is a mountain town in the Huasteca Potosina, perched on steep, misty slopes covered in coffee plants and cloud forest. Teenek and Nahua communities live in the surrounding hills, and the town gained international renown thanks to Edward James, the British poet and patron of surrealism, who spent decades building a fantastical garden here.

Las Pozas is the main reason visitors come. Its concrete stairways leading nowhere, columns shaped like flowers and half-finished structures emerge from the jungle beside pools and waterfalls, creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else. In town, the central square is a pleasant place to sit, the sixteenth-century Ex Convento de San Agustín is among the oldest buildings in the state, and the Museo Leonora Carrington displays work by the surrealist painter. At dusk or dawn, the Parakeet Cave puts on a show as flocks fly in or out. Springs, rivers and lush mountain scenery surround the town.

Xilitla suits art lovers and travelers who enjoy steep walks and humid climates. Visiting Las Pozas early or on weekdays helps avoid crowds. The Sótano de las Golondrinas near Aquismón is within reach for a dawn excursion, and Tamazunchale and Ciudad Valles connect onward. Dry months offer clearer trails.

Best seasonNovember to April brings drier trails; Las Pozas is lush year-round but rain is frequent in summer.
Ideal stayTwo days allows an unhurried visit to Las Pozas and the Sótano de las Golondrinas.
ArrivingMost travelers arrive by road from Ciudad Valles, the main gateway to the Huasteca.
