About Tepotzotlán

Tepotzotlán is a town just north of Mexico City whose historic center grew around a Jesuit college founded in the late sixteenth century. That complex now holds one of the country's most important collections of colonial art, and the town has been named a Pueblo Mágico. Despite its proximity to the capital's sprawl, its cobbled plaza and arcades keep a distinctly small-town atmosphere.

The Museo Nacional del Virreinato occupies the former college, with cloisters, chapels and galleries displaying paintings, sculpture, furniture and religious objects from the viceregal era. Its centerpiece is the Church of San Francisco Javier, whose ornate Churrigueresque facade and gilded altarpieces are considered among the finest examples of Mexican Baroque. Behind the museum, the gardens and orchard offer a quiet place to rest. The Parroquia de San Pedro Apóstol and the Plaza Virreinal form the lively core of town, especially on weekends.

The Arcos del Sitio, a tall colonial aqueduct in the countryside outside town, is set in an ecological park with walking trails. Weekend tianguises, the municipal market and food stalls serve regional dishes, and Pulquería El Mirador offers pulque with a view. Tepotzotlán suits art lovers and day-trippers from Mexico City. December brings traditional pastorelas, or nativity plays, that draw visitors.

Best seasonOctober through April offers dry, sunny days; December is lively with pastorelas.
Ideal stayOne day is enough for the museum, church and plaza; add a half day for the aqueduct.
ArrivingMost visitors drive or bus north from Mexico City along the highway toward Querétaro.
