About Tepoztlán

Tepoztlán is a town in northern Morelos set in a valley beneath dramatic, eroded cliffs that look almost like a stage backdrop. Its history reaches back long before the Spanish conquest, and Nahua traditions remain visible in festivals and daily life. Known as a Pueblo Mágico, it also has a reputation as a spiritual retreat, attracting artists, healers and weekend visitors from Mexico City.

The main event is the steep climb to El Tepozteco, a small pyramid perched on a ridge and associated with Tepoztécatl, a deity linked to pulque. The hiking trail through Tepozteco National Park is short but strenuous, with stone steps and a final ladder, and the view from the top is the reward. Back in town, the Dominican Ex-convento de la Natividad, part of a UNESCO-listed group of early monasteries, displays faded murals and a museum. The Museo Carlos Pellicer holds pre-Hispanic artifacts, and the market around Avenida 5 de Mayo sells crafts, snacks and famous ice creams.

Nearby villages such as Amatlán de Quetzalcóatl, Santa Catalina and San Juan Tlacotenco offer quieter countryside. Carnaval and the September festival bring chinelo dancers and crowds. Temazcal sweat lodges are a local specialty. Weekends are busy, so weekdays suit travelers seeking a calmer pace.

Best seasonThe dry months from October to May make the hike safer; weekdays are quieter.
Ideal stayOne or two nights allows the pyramid hike, the monastery and a relaxed evening.
ArrivingBuses run from Mexico City's southern terminal, and many visitors drive via the Cuernavaca highway.
