About Tequisquiapan

Tequisquiapan is a small town in the semi-arid hills of Querétaro, known for its thermal waters, colorful streets and relaxed weekend atmosphere. Once a farming town and a stop for travelers on the old routes north of Mexico City, it later became a popular getaway, and its center of arcades and bougainvillea is compact and easy to walk.

Plaza Hidalgo, shaded and lively, faces the pink-hued Parroquia de Santa María de la Asunción, and cafes and ice cream shops spill around it. The Mercado de Artesanías is a good place to browse baskets, textiles and wicker. La Pila park offers trees and walking paths, while the Barrio de la Magdalena and Cerro Grande add a more local feel. Many visitors book time at the thermal spas and hotel pools. The surrounding region is known for wine and cheese, with vineyards such as La Redonda on the wine route, and the giant monolith of Peña de Bernal is a short drive away.

Tequisquiapan suits couples, families and anyone wanting an easy weekend with good food and wine. The annual cheese and wine fair, usually held in late spring, draws large crowds. Weekdays are calmer. The dry season brings sunny days and cool nights.

Best seasonOctober to May brings dry, sunny weather; late spring hosts the cheese and wine fair.
Ideal stayTwo nights allows time for spas, the town and a day at Peña de Bernal.
