About Jalpan de Serra

Jalpan de Serra is the main town of Querétaro's Sierra Gorda, set in a warm valley surrounded by green, folded mountains. It grew around the first of the Franciscan missions founded in the region in the eighteenth century under Junípero Serra, whose name the town carries. Those missions, with their exuberant carved facades, are now recognized together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Misión de Santiago de Jalpan stands on the main garden, and its ochre facade, crowded with saints, angels and vines, is the reason most people come. Across the square, the Museo de la Sierra Gorda covers the region's indigenous peoples, the mission era and local natural history, and Casa de las Artesanías sells crafts from mountain communities. On hot afternoons, families cool off at the Playita on the Jalpan River, while the reservoir behind the Jalpan Dam attracts waterbirds and evening walkers.

Jalpan works best as a base for exploring the rest of the Sierra Gorda. The missions of Landa de Matamoros, Tancoyol and Concá are all within driving distance, each in its own small village, and the Concá area adds rivers and springs. Travelers who enjoy colonial art, mountain roads and quiet small-town evenings tend to stay a few nights.

Best seasonOctober to April is drier and cooler; summer brings heat, rain and lush green hills.
Ideal stayTwo to three nights allows visits to the other Sierra Gorda missions.
ArrivingMost visitors drive from the city of Querétaro on a long, winding mountain highway.
