About Pachuca

Pachuca, the capital of Hidalgo, grew around silver mining in the hills north of Mexico City, and it is nicknamed La Bella Airosa for the strong winds that sweep through it. In the nineteenth century, miners from Cornwall arrived to work the mines, bringing with them the pasty, now a local staple called the paste, and they are often credited with introducing football to Mexico. Colorful houses climb the hillsides around a compact center.

The Reloj Monumental, a clock tower inaugurated in 1910, stands at the heart of the main plaza and serves as the city's emblem. Nearby, the Parroquia de la Asunción and the Ex-convento de San Francisco, home to a national photography archive and museum, reward a visit. A large statue of Cristo Rey overlooks the city from a hilltop, and the Macromural de Palmitas transformed a hillside neighborhood with a giant painted design. Mina de Acosta offers underground tours of an old mine, while the Museo del Paste traces the dish's history. Football fans can watch the Tuzos at Estadio Hidalgo.

Real del Monte, a former mining town with Cornish heritage, is a short drive into the mountains, as is El Chico National Park with its rock formations and trails. Pachuca suits travelers interested in mining history and food. Bring a jacket, since evenings are cool.

Best seasonOctober through May is drier; the highlands stay cool year round, especially at night.
Ideal stayOne or two days, plus time for Real del Monte and El Chico.
ArrivingFrequent buses and the highway connect Pachuca with Mexico City to the south.
