About Mishawaka

Mishawaka is a city of about 50,000 people in St. Joseph County, Indiana, on the St. Joseph River just east of South Bend. Nicknamed the Princess City, it grew in the 1800s around iron works, mills and later the large Ball-Band rubber footwear factory, and it is now the main shopping and dining center of the South Bend area.

The St. Joseph River runs through the heart of the city, and the Mishawaka Riverwalk links riverside parks, plazas and bridges on both banks. Battell Park is known for its stone terraces, rock gardens and bandshell built in the 1930s, while the historic Beiger Mansion and a row of 19th-century houses recall the city's industrial-era wealth. The Hannah Lindahl Children's Museum is a favorite with families.

The Grape Road and Main Street corridor holds University Park Mall and dozens of restaurants. The University of Notre Dame, the Studebaker National Museum and downtown South Bend are only a few miles west, making Mishawaka a convenient base for game weekends.

Best seasonMay to October for riverfront walks; fall weekends are busy with Notre Dame football.
Ideal stayOne day, or a weekend combined with South Bend and Notre Dame.
ArrivingSouth Bend International Airport is about 15 minutes away; the Indiana Toll Road runs along the north side of the city.
