About Michigan City

Michigan City is Indiana's lighthouse town, a Lake Michigan harbor where a red-roofed pierhead light marks the mouth of Trail Creek and sand dunes rise along the shore. Its beaches, marina and summer crowds from Chicago, about an hour away, give it the feel of a classic lakeside resort.

Founded in the 1830s as a port at the end of the Michigan Road, the city grew with railroads and railcar factories; the Barker Mansion recalls the fortune of one railcar maker. The 1858 lighthouse is now a museum, and Washington Park combines a broad beach, a hillside zoo and views of the catwalk leading out to the pierhead light. Downtown's Uptown Arts District mixes galleries, murals and cafes, while bargain hunters head to the outlet center by the harbor.

Just west of town, Mount Baldy in Indiana Dunes National Park is a moving sand dune with views over the lake, and the International Friendship Gardens bloom along Trail Creek.

Best seasonJune to September for beaches and lake swimming; fall is quieter and good for dune walks.
Ideal stayTwo days for the lakefront, museums and a dunes hike.
ArrivingThe South Shore Line commuter train runs from downtown Chicago; I-94 passes just south of town, and Chicago's airports are about 1 to 1.5 hours away.
