About Barkerville

Barkerville is a preserved gold rush town in the Cariboo Mountains of central British Columbia. It grew almost overnight after Billy Barker struck gold on Williams Creek in the 1860s, briefly becoming one of the largest settlements in western North America. Today the town is a living history site, with more than a hundred restored and reconstructed buildings that bring the boom era back to life.

The main street, with its wooden boardwalks and false-fronted shops, is the heart of a visit. Costumed interpreters play the roles of miners, merchants and townspeople, and performances at the Theatre Royal recall the entertainment of the period. Barkerville also had a large Chinese community, and its legacy is unusually well preserved: the Chee Kung Tong building and the Tai Ping house are among the structures that tell the story of Chinese miners and businesses. Visitors can sit in the Barkerville school, try gold panning and walk to Billy Barker's claim along Williams Creek. Nearby, the village of Wells offers lodging and an artsy feel, and Bowron Lake Provincial Park is known for its multi-day canoe circuit.

Barkerville suits families, history enthusiasts and road-trippers. The historic route of the Cariboo Wagon Road connects the area to Quesnel, the main service town to the west.

Best seasonSummer, when interpreters, theater shows and full programming run throughout the town.
Ideal stayOne full day for Barkerville; add days for Wells or a Bowron Lake canoe trip.
ArrivingVisitors drive east from Quesnel on Highway 26 to reach Wells and Barkerville.
