About Anchorage

Anchorage is Alaska's largest city, set on a peninsula between arms of Cook Inlet with the Chugach Mountains rising directly behind it. It began as a railroad construction camp in 1914 and grew into the state's commercial hub. Moose wander through neighborhoods, and wilderness begins just beyond city limits.

The Anchorage Museum is the city's largest museum, covering Alaska's art, history and Indigenous cultures, and the Log Cabin Visitor Information Center on Fourth Avenue is a good starting place downtown. The Alaska Native Heritage Center shares the traditions of the state's Indigenous peoples through exhibits, performances and village sites. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail follows the shoreline for miles, passing Earthquake Park, where the ground shifted during the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake, and ending at Kincaid Park, a large wooded area used for skiing and biking. In summer, anglers try their luck for salmon in Ship Creek downtown. Lake Hood Seaplane Base is one of the busiest of its kind in the world. Flattop Mountain is a popular short but steep hike, and Potter Marsh offers boardwalk birdwatching south of the city.

Anchorage suits travelers beginning road, rail or cruise journeys around Alaska. The Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm is one of the most scenic drives in the state. Summer brings long daylight, while winter offers chances to see the northern lights.

Best seasonJune to August brings long days and mild weather; winter offers snow sports and northern lights chances.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers the city before heading to Denali, Kenai or Seward.
ArrivingTed Stevens Anchorage International Airport is Alaska's main gateway, and the Alaska Railroad links the city north and south.
