About Denali National Park

Denali National Park and Preserve covers a vast area of interior Alaska, centered on Denali, the highest peak in North America at over 20,000 feet. The park is largely wilderness, with a single road leading into it, and it protects tundra, taiga forest, glaciers and populations of grizzly bears, caribou, moose, Dall sheep and wolves. Clouds often hide the mountain, so a clear view is never guaranteed.

The Denali Visitor Center near the entrance introduces the park's ecology and history, and the nearby sled dog kennels, home to working dogs that patrol in winter, offer summer demonstrations. Short hikes such as the Horseshoe Lake Trail and the steeper Mount Healy Overlook Trail start near the entrance. Private vehicles may drive only to Savage River, beyond which buses carry visitors deeper into the park, past Sanctuary River and Teklanika River and over Sable Pass, with frequent wildlife stops. A landslide has closed the road beyond the Pretty Rocks area near mile 43 for several years, so access to destinations such as Eielson Visitor Center, Wonder Lake and Kantishna depends on current conditions and construction.

The park suits wildlife watchers, hikers and travelers looking for remote landscapes. Bus tickets and campgrounds should be booked early. The main season runs from late May to mid-September, and weather can change quickly.

Best seasonMid-June to August offers the best weather and bus service, with fall colors arriving in late August.
Ideal stayTwo to three days allows a bus trip into the park and hikes near the entrance.
ArrivingMost visitors arrive by car or the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage or Fairbanks.
