About Santa Monica

Santa Monica is a seaside city on Santa Monica Bay, surrounded on three sides by Los Angeles and facing miles of wide sandy beach. The area took its name from Saint Monica, and the city was founded in 1875 and incorporated in 1886. It grew as a beach resort for Los Angeles, and early 1900s hotels, apartment buildings and the famous pier still give it a classic Southern California character.

The Santa Monica Pier, first opened in 1909, is the city's icon, with a historic carousel, the Pacific Park amusement area and its solar-powered Ferris wheel, and a sign marking the western end of Route 66. Above the beach, Palisades Park runs along the bluffs with palm trees and sunset views.

Downtown, the Third Street Promenade is a lively pedestrian street of shops and restaurants, while Main Street has cafes and boutiques near the beach. The beach bike path, Tongva Park and the galleries of Bergamot Station add to the mix.

Best seasonPleasant all year; late summer and fall are sunniest, while May and June often bring morning clouds called June Gloom.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the pier, beach, Promenade, Main Street and a bike ride along the coast.
ArrivingLos Angeles International Airport is about 25 minutes away, the Metro E Line ends in downtown Santa Monica, and Interstate 10 ends at the coast here.
