About Watsonville

Watsonville is a city in the Pajaro Valley in southern Santa Cruz County, a few miles inland from Monterey Bay and about 15 miles southeast of Santa Cruz. Founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1868, it grew as the market town for one of the richest farming valleys in California, first famous for its apple orchards and later for strawberries, lettuce and berries shipped across the country. Generations of Mexican, Croatian, Japanese and Filipino farm families shaped the town's character.

Today Watsonville is a city of around 52,000 people that still lives by the farming calendar, with fields of strawberries and vegetables stretching to the edge of town. Its historic downtown centers on the tree-shaded City Plaza, laid out in the 1860s with a bandstand and a Civil War-era cannon, and Main Street keeps handsome Victorian and 1920s buildings such as the tall Resetar Hotel, along with taquerias, bakeries and family restaurants.

For visitors, Watsonville is a down-to-earth base for the Monterey Bay coast. The Watsonville Slough trails wind through wetlands that attract herons and migrating birds, Pinto Lake offers fishing and lakeside picnics, and quiet Sunset State Beach lies just west of town. The Santa Cruz County Fair and the Agricultural History Project celebrate the valley's farm heritage, and in summer the Watsonville Strawberry Festival honors the crop that made the town famous.

Best seasonApril to October for berry season and mild coastal weather; fall is often the sunniest time of year.
Ideal stayA half day for downtown, the plaza and a farm stand, or longer as a base for Monterey Bay beaches.
ArrivingSan José Mineta International Airport is about an hour away and Monterey Regional Airport about 40 minutes, and Highway 1 and Highway 152 serve the city.
