About Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a small seaside village on the Monterey Peninsula, set among cypress and pine trees above a white sand beach. It grew as an artists' and writers' colony in the early twentieth century, and it still keeps a distinctly village character, with no street addresses in much of town, no chain-heavy strip, and a mix of galleries, wine-tasting rooms and cozy restaurants.

Carmel Beach, at the foot of Ocean Avenue, is the town's front porch, popular for sunset walks and dog-friendly outings. Ocean Avenue and the courtyards off it are lined with small shops, and the side streets reveal the fairy-tale storybook cottages that have become a local signature. Scenic Road follows the bluffs south to Carmel Point, passing Tor House, the stone home built by poet Robinson Jeffers. Nearby, the Carmel Mission Basilica, founded by Junípero Serra, is among California's best-preserved missions, and Mission Ranch offers pastoral views over meadows toward the sea.

The village suits travelers looking for a relaxed, walkable stay with good food and coastal scenery. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, just south, holds some of the most beautiful shoreline in California, including China Cove and Gibson Beach. The 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach and the attractions of Monterey are close by, and Big Sur begins just down Highway 1. Fog is common on summer mornings.

Best seasonSeptember and October often bring the sunniest, clearest weather; spring is pleasant and green.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers the village, Point Lobos and the 17-Mile Drive.
ArrivingMonterey Regional Airport is closest; many visitors drive from San Francisco or San Jose.
