About Salinas

Salinas lies in the broad Salinas Valley, a few miles inland from Monterey Bay, between the Gabilan and Santa Lucia mountain ranges. The town grew up in the 1850s and 1860s as a stage stop and cattle center, became the seat of Monterey County and was incorporated in 1874. Fertile soil and the cool ocean fog later made the valley one of the most productive farming regions on earth, earning it the name Salad Bowl of the World.

Salinas is also the hometown of John Steinbeck, born here in 1902, who set novels such as East of Eden in the valley and the nearby coast. The National Steinbeck Center in Oldtown celebrates his life and the region's farming heritage, and his family's Victorian home is a beloved local landmark. Generations of farmworkers, many from Mexico and the Philippines, shaped the city's culture and food.

Oldtown Salinas keeps a historic Main Street of brick and Art Deco buildings, and each July the California Rodeo Salinas, held since 1911, is one of the largest rodeos in the country. Wineries along the River Road Wine Trail, Toro Park's hills and the Monterey Peninsula's beaches are all close by.

Best seasonMay to October, with mild days and morning fog; July brings the California Rodeo Salinas.
Ideal stayOne day for the Steinbeck Center, Oldtown and the Steinbeck House, plus wine tasting or a trip to Monterey.
ArrivingMonterey Regional Airport is about 25 minutes southwest, San Jose International about an hour north, and Amtrak's Coast Starlight stops in Salinas.
