About Monterey

Sea otters float in the kelp just offshore, sea lions bark from the wharf pilings, and adobe walls from Spanish and Mexican days still line the old streets: Monterey mixes California's earliest history with one of the richest stretches of coast on the Pacific. Founded as a presidio and mission in 1770, it served as the capital of Alta California, and in 1849 delegates met at Colton Hall to write the first state constitution.

Cannery Row, once lined with sardine canneries and immortalized by John Steinbeck, now leads to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, famous for its towering kelp forest tank. Old Fisherman's Wharf serves chowder and launches whale-watching boats into the protected Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Monterey State Historic Park links the Custom House, Pacific House and other adobes along a walking Path of History.

A paved coastal trail runs along the bay toward Pacific Grove, divers enter the water at San Carlos Beach, and Jacks Peak looks over the whole peninsula. Carmel, Big Sur and the Salinas Valley wine country are short drives away.

Best seasonSeptember and October bring the sunniest, clearest days; summer mornings are often foggy, and winter is gray whale season.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the aquarium, the historic district and a whale-watching trip.
ArrivingMonterey Regional Airport is minutes from downtown; San Jose airport is about 75 minutes north and San Francisco about two hours.
