About San Carlos

Halfway between San Francisco and San Jose, San Carlos calls itself the City of Good Living, and the nickname fits: a walkable downtown on Laurel Street, oak-covered hills on the west side and an airport where you can stand beneath the nose of a Boeing 747. The city sits in San Mateo County between Belmont and Redwood City, with Caltrain stopping right in its center.

The area was part of the Rancho de las Pulgas land grant before rail arrived, and the sandstone depot built in 1888 still anchors the station today. San Carlos incorporated in 1925 and grew into a quiet residential town with a strong small-business streak, plus a cluster of tech and biotech firms near the bay.

Most visitors come for the Hiller Aviation Museum, an evening stroll along Laurel Street and a hike in Pulgas Ridge. From here it is an easy hop to Stanford, the coastal hills along Highway 92 to Half Moon Bay, or a train ride up to San Francisco.
