About Newark

Newark is a city of about 47,000 people on the east shore of San Francisco Bay, almost completely surrounded by Fremont and connected to the Peninsula by the Dumbarton Bridge. It incorporated in 1955 to stay independent of its growing neighbor, and it grew from salt works and factories into a diverse Silicon Valley suburb, home today to electric car maker Lucid Motors.

NewPark Mall is the city's big shopping center, and Newark's large Asian American community is reflected in markets such as 99 Ranch and in restaurants serving food from across Asia. Lakeshore Park circles a lagoon in the middle of town, and Newark Community Park, Birch Grove Park and the Silliman Activity Center offer sports, pools and green space.

The bay shore is wild and close. The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge protects marshes and salt ponds full of shorebirds, and Coyote Hills Regional Park, just over the city line, has bayside trails and Ohlone shell mounds. Ardenwood Historic Farm, also next door in Fremont, recreates farm life from the 1890s with a Victorian house and a working steam train on weekends.

Best seasonApril to October for dry, mild days by the bay, and winter for migrating birds.
Ideal stayHalf a day for the parks and markets, a full day with Coyote Hills and Ardenwood.
ArrivingSan Jose and Oakland airports are each about 20 miles away, and BART's Fremont stations are a short drive.
