About San Mateo

San Mateo lies on the San Francisco Peninsula about 20 miles south of San Francisco, stretching from the shore of the bay up into wooded hills. The name comes from the Spanish name for nearby San Mateo Creek, and the town grew in the late 1800s as a stop on the railroad and a retreat for wealthy San Francisco families who built estates here. It was incorporated in 1894.

Today San Mateo is a lively Peninsula city with a walkable downtown full of restaurants, cafes and shops near the Caltrain station. Its leafy Central Park holds a beautiful Japanese Tea Garden, a rose garden and a small train ride for children.

Along the bay, Coyote Point Recreation Area has a beach, a marina and trails through eucalyptus groves, while the former Bay Meadows racetrack has become a new neighborhood with parks. Laurelwood Park and Sugarloaf Mountain offer trails in the hills, and the Bay Trail follows the shoreline.

Best seasonSeptember and October are often the warmest; spring is green and mild, and summer is pleasant with some morning fog.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown, Central Park and the Japanese Tea Garden, Coyote Point and the shoreline trail.
ArrivingSan Francisco International Airport is about 15 minutes away, Caltrain stops downtown and at Hillsdale, and US 101 and Highway 92 cross the city.
