About Hayward

Hayward sits on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, where the East Bay hills meet the flat bayside plain. In 1852 William Hayward opened a hotel and store here on land that had been part of the vast Rancho San Lorenzo, and the town that grew around it was incorporated in 1876. Orchards, canneries and poultry farms filled the valley, worked by Portuguese, Japanese and other immigrant families.

Hayward grew into one of the largest cities in the Bay Area, calling itself the Heart of the Bay because of its central location. It is also famous among geologists: the Hayward Fault runs right through downtown, slowly bending curbs and walls, and the city's old 1930 city hall was closed because the fault creeps beneath it.

Today visitors find history at the Victorian Meek Mansion and the McConaghy House, peaceful paths in the Hayward Japanese Gardens and a revived downtown with local restaurants. The Hayward Regional Shoreline offers miles of bayside trails through restored marshes, while the hills above the city hold Garin and Dry Creek regional parks and the hilltop campus of Cal State East Bay with sweeping bay views.

Best seasonApril to October for the driest, sunniest weather; spring turns the hills green and brings wildflowers.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown, the Japanese Gardens, the historic houses and a walk on the shoreline or in the hills.
ArrivingOakland International Airport is about 15 minutes northwest, BART trains stop at several Hayward stations, and Interstate 880 runs through the city.
