About Los Gatos

Los Gatos is a small town in Santa Clara County, tucked against the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains at the southwestern edge of Silicon Valley, about 10 miles southwest of San José. Its name, Spanish for the cats, comes from the mountain lions and bobcats that roamed the area when it was part of Rancho Rinconada de Los Gatos. The town began around Forbes Mill, a flour mill built beside Los Gatos Creek in 1854, and grew as a stop on the narrow-gauge railroad to Santa Cruz and a center for orchards, vineyards and lumber.

Incorporated in 1887, Los Gatos has kept the character of a village while the valley around it filled with tech campuses. Its downtown along North Santa Cruz Avenue and Main Street is lined with Victorian and Spanish Revival buildings, boutiques, wine bars and restaurants, framed by green hillsides. Today about 33,000 people live in the town, which is known for its leafy neighborhoods of historic homes and its easy access to the mountains.

Visitors come for a relaxed day of strolling, dining and getting outdoors. The Los Gatos Creek Trail runs right through town, linking Vasona Lake County Park, where the miniature Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad carries families through the trees, with Lexington Reservoir in the hills above. The historic Novitiate winery, now Testarossa, pours wine in 1880s cellars, and the New Museum Los Gatos and the historic Forbes Mill tell stories of the town's art and history.

Best seasonApril to October for warm, dry weather; spring brings green hills and wildflowers, and fall is ideal for wine tasting.
Ideal stayA day for downtown, the creek trail and Vasona Lake, or a weekend with wineries and the Santa Cruz Mountains.
ArrivingSan José Mineta International Airport is about 20 minutes away, and Highway 17 and Highway 85 meet at the edge of town.
