About Fremont

Fremont lies on the southeast shore of San Francisco Bay at the foot of Mission Peak, on land long home to the Ohlone people. In 1797 Spanish missionaries founded Mission San Jose here, and the farm towns that grew up around it in the 1800s, Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, Niles and Warm Springs, joined together in 1956 to form the city of Fremont, named for the explorer John C. Fremont.

In the early 1900s the Niles district briefly became a center of silent filmmaking, where Charlie Chaplin made The Tramp in 1915. Later the city grew into a hub of manufacturing and technology, home to a large car factory, and it is now one of the most diverse cities in the Bay Area, with large Asian and Afghan American communities and a wide range of restaurants.

Visitors find history at the restored Mission San Jose, the Victorian farm at Ardenwood Historic Farm and the old-fashioned main street of Niles, with its silent film museum and heritage railway. Nature is close everywhere, from the steep climb up Mission Peak to Lake Elizabeth in Central Park, the marshes of Coyote Hills and the bayside trails of the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge.

Best seasonMarch to May for green hills and wildflowers, and September to October for warm, clear days.
Ideal stayOne to two days for Mission San Jose, Niles, Ardenwood and a hike up Mission Peak or around Coyote Hills.
ArrivingSan Jose Mineta International Airport is about 25 minutes south, BART trains stop at Fremont and Warm Springs, and Amtrak and ACE trains stop at Fremont Centerville.
