About Temagami

Temagami is a small town and a vast wilderness area in northeastern Ontario, north of North Bay. Lake Temagami, with its long arms and hundreds of islands, sits at the center of a region known for old-growth red and white pine, clear lakes and a dense web of canoe routes long traveled by the Teme-Augama Anishnabai.

The Temagami Fire Tower on Caribou Mountain is the easiest way to see the landscape, with views over forest and water stretching to the horizon. On the lake, boat trips, fishing and island camps define summer, and Finlayson Point Provincial Park offers camping close to town. Short trails through the Wakimika Triangle and White Bear Forest pass among towering pines. Experienced paddlers head into Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park, and hikers can aim for Ishpatina Ridge, the highest point in Ontario. The historic Temagami Railway Station in town recalls the era when the railway brought the first tourists.

Temagami suits canoeists, anglers and travelers looking for genuine backcountry. Services are limited, so planning matters. Marten River Provincial Park lies to the south, while the silver-mining heritage of Cobalt and the lakeside towns of Temiskaming Shores are an easy drive north. Summer and early fall are best.

Best seasonLate June to September for paddling and hiking; September has fewer bugs and early color.
Ideal stayThree days for lake outings and short hikes; a week or more for canoe trips.
ArrivingTravelers drive Highway 11 north from North Bay; intercity buses also serve the route.
