About Danville

Danville is a leafy town of about 44,000 people in the San Ramon Valley of the East Bay, roughly 30 miles east of San Francisco, with Mount Diablo rising to the east and the Las Trampas hills to the west. It grew from 1850s ranches and orchards, incorporated as a town in 1982, and still keeps a relaxed small-town feel despite being part of the Bay Area.

Downtown Danville centers on Hartz Avenue, a walkable main street of restaurants, wine bars, cafés and boutiques. The Museum of the San Ramon Valley fills the restored 1891 Southern Pacific depot, with a vintage locomotive parked outside, and the Iron Horse Regional Trail follows the old rail line through town for walkers and cyclists.

History and nature are close by. Tao House, the Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site, preserves the hillside home where the Nobel Prize-winning playwright wrote some of his greatest works, and the Blackhawk Museum shows classic cars and world cultures. Mount Diablo State Park offers summit views across much of Northern California, while Las Trampas Regional Wilderness has quieter ridge trails.

Best seasonMarch to May for green hills and wildflowers, and September to October for warm, clear days.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown and the museums, two with Mount Diablo.
ArrivingOakland International Airport is about 25 miles west; BART's Walnut Creek and Dublin stations are a short drive away.
