San Ramon is a city of about 85,000 people in the Tri-Valley area of Contra Costa County, California, about 35 miles east of San Francisco. Ranching and farming families settled the valley in the mid-1800s, and the area remained rural until the 1970s, when the Bishop Ranch business park and new neighborhoods transformed it. The city incorporated in 1983.
The valley's farming past is preserved at Forest Home Farms Historic Park, with its orchard, barns and the Glass House Museum. The new City Center Bishop Ranch has become the city's lively gathering place, with shops, restaurants and a cinema around a central plaza.
San Ramon is surrounded by green hills. Las Trampas Regional Wilderness offers ridge trails to the west, the Iron Horse Regional Trail runs through town on a former rail line, and San Ramon Central Park hosts the Art and Wind Festival each Memorial Day weekend. Mount Diablo, Danville and the wine country of Livermore are close by.
A 16-acre historic farm park with a walnut orchard, barns, farm equipment and the Glass House Museum, the restored 19th-century home of a pioneer valley farming family. Exhibits show ranch life in the San Ramon Valley. Grounds are open for walks, while house tours and events run on set days, so check ahead.
A modern open-air center that opened in 2018 at Bishop Ranch, with shops, restaurants, a cinema and a central plaza used for concerts, seasonal celebrations and community events. It is the city's main place for an evening out. Parking is in garages close to the plaza.
The city's main park, with lawns, sports fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, picnic areas and walking paths next to the community center and library. It hosts the Art and Wind Festival and summer concerts. A good spot for a family picnic or to let kids play after visiting the city center.

A small city-run garden along Crow Canyon Road with demonstration plots, community garden beds, a creek and quiet paths. It is a calm spot to see seasonal plantings and learn about gardening in the valley's climate. Hours are limited and some areas are for gardeners only, so check before visiting.
A large free festival held each Memorial Day weekend in Central Park, with an art fair, kite flying demonstrations, live music, food, children's activities and a carnival. It draws crowds from across the Bay Area. Arrive early or use shuttle options, as parking near the park fills quickly.
A daily-fee 18-hole golf course set in the hills on the east side of San Ramon, with elevation changes, wide valley views and a clubhouse restaurant and event space. It is open to the public and popular for weekend rounds. Book tee times ahead, and expect warm afternoons in summer.
A narrow oak-lined canyon on the western edge of San Ramon, where Bollinger Canyon Road leaves the suburbs behind and follows Bollinger Creek past ranch land and grassy hills, with Mount Diablo rising behind on clear days. The road dead-ends at a regional park trailhead. Drive slowly, as cyclists and riders share the lane.
