About Kingsville

Few towns owe their existence to a single ranch, but Kingsville does. The city grew on land from the legendary King Ranch, founded by steamboat captain Richard King in 1853, and took shape in 1904 when the railroad reached South Texas. Today it is a college and Navy town of roughly 25,000 people and the seat of Kleberg County, about 40 miles southwest of Corpus Christi.

Ranching heritage is everywhere. The King Ranch, larger than the state of Rhode Island and a National Historic Landmark, offers guided tours of its pastures and cattle, while downtown holds the King Ranch Museum and the ranch's own saddle shop in an early 1900s mercantile building. Texas A&M University-Kingsville brings students, Javelina football and the John E. Conner Museum, and jet trainers from Naval Air Station Kingsville often streak overhead.

The brush country around town is a celebrated birding area, and the shallow, salty waters of Baffin Bay lie a short drive southeast, known for big speckled trout and quiet shoreline parks. Corpus Christi and Padre Island make easy day trips.

Best seasonOctober to April, when the South Texas heat eases and migrating birds pass through.
Ideal stayOne full day for the ranch tour and downtown, plus a morning on Baffin Bay.
ArrivingCorpus Christi International Airport is about 45 minutes northeast via US 77.
