About Russellville

Set where the Arkansas River widens into Lake Dardanelle, Russellville sits between the Ozark Mountains to the north and the Ouachita foothills to the south. It is the seat of Pope County and home to Arkansas Tech University, whose students keep the town lively through the school year.

The town grew up along the railroad in the 1870s, and its Missouri Pacific depot and brick Main Street still recall that era. Today Russellville is best known as an outdoor base: Lake Dardanelle State Park sits right on the edge of town, with fishing, boating and a visitor center that tells the story of the Trail of Tears water route that passed this way on the river.

Within a short drive are the Bona Dea Trails wetlands, the sheer cliff of Dardanelle Rock, the hilltop cabins of Mount Nebo State Park, winter bald eagles at Holla Bend refuge and the clear swimming holes of Long Pool in the Ozark National Forest. Petit Jean State Park, with its waterfall and canyon trails, is under an hour away.

Best seasonSpring and fall for hiking and lake days; winter for bald eagle viewing at Holla Bend.
Ideal stayTwo days to combine the lake, Mount Nebo and an Ozark day trip.
ArrivingInterstate 40 runs through town, about 80 minutes from Little Rock's Clinton National Airport.
