Conway is a city of about 65,000 people in central Arkansas, about 30 miles northwest of Little Rock and the county seat of Faulkner County. Often called the City of Colleges, it is home to the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College and Central Baptist College, which give the city a young, lively feel.
Downtown Conway centers on Front Street and Toad Suck Square, named for the old Toad Suck Ferry crossing on the Arkansas River and celebrated each spring at the Toad Suck Daze festival. Historic districts such as the Robinson and Hendrix College Addition neighborhoods hold well-kept early 20th-century homes, and the Faulkner County Museum tells local history.
Outdoors, Conway sits close to Lake Beaverfork, Cadron Settlement Park and the Toad Suck Lock and Dam on the Arkansas River, while Woolly Hollow State Park and Lake Conway are short drives away. Little Rock and the Ozark foothills are both easy day trips.
The heart of downtown Conway around Front Street and Oak Street, with local restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and murals in restored brick buildings. It hosts the Toad Suck Daze festival each May and other street events through the year. Park once and explore the whole downtown on foot.
A National Register historic district of tree-lined streets near downtown with well-preserved homes from the early 1900s in Craftsman, Colonial Revival and Tudor styles. It makes a relaxing walk or bike ride from Toad Suck Square. Homes are private, so admire them from the sidewalk.
A respected private liberal arts college founded in 1876 and in Conway since 1890, with a leafy campus of red-brick buildings such as Galloway Hall and Martin Hall. Visitors can stroll the grounds, see the Bailey Library and walk to the mixed-use Hendrix Village nearby. Campus is quietest in summer.
One of Arkansas' largest universities, with a large campus on the south side of downtown, historic buildings such as Old Main, the Bears football stadium and a busy calendar of games, lectures and concerts. Check the Reynolds Performance Hall schedule for touring shows during the school year.
The main performing arts venue on the University of Central Arkansas campus, presenting touring Broadway productions, orchestras, dance and comedy in a large modern hall. It is the best place in Conway for an evening out. Buy tickets early for Broadway nights, which often sell out.
A small museum housed in the historic former Faulkner County jail near downtown, with exhibits on pioneer life, the Civil War, farming, schools and the people of the county. Its displays and old cells give a feel for early Conway. Admission is free; check opening hours before visiting.
A historic courthouse on Locust Street that anchors downtown Conway and is still in use as the seat of county government. Its stately facade and grounds are a nice backdrop for photos while walking downtown. Business hours only for the interior; the outside can be seen any time.
A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park at the mouth of Cadron Creek on the Arkansas River, marking one of the earliest European-American settlements in the area and a stop on the Trail of Tears. A replica blockhouse, interpretive signs and walking trails tell the story. Free, with river views.
A city lake on the northwest edge of Conway with a park, boat ramps, a swim beach in summer, picnic pavilions and good fishing for bass, crappie and catfish. Kayaks and paddleboards are popular on calm days. Sunset over the water is lovely; bring your own boat or gear.
A Corps of Engineers park beside the Toad Suck Lock and Dam on the Arkansas River, west of Conway, with campsites, a boat ramp, fishing and picnic areas. Watching barges pass through the lock is a fun extra. It takes its name from the old riverboat landing that also named the festival.
A wooded state park about 20 minutes north of Conway near Greenbrier, built around Lake Bennett, with swimming in summer, boat and kayak rentals, campsites, a historic log cabin and the Huckleberry mountain bike and hiking trail. A great half-day escape; reserve campsites ahead in summer.
