Paragould sits on Crowley's Ridge, a narrow band of wooded hills rising out of the flat Delta farmland of northeast Arkansas. The seat of Greene County, with about 29,000 people, it calls itself the Friendly City and is a practical, unhurried base for exploring the ridge country.
The town was founded in the early 1880s where two railroads crossed, and its name combines the surnames of two rival railroad men, J. W. Paramore and Jay Gould. Timber and farming built the early town, and many brick commercial buildings from that era still line the downtown streets around the courthouse.
Downtown has the restored Collins Theatre, which hosts concerts and plays, and a handful of historic churches and homes. The Crowley's Ridge Parkway, a National Scenic Byway, runs through town, and Crowley's Ridge State Park, with lakes, trails and stone buildings from the 1930s, lies a short drive southwest. Jonesboro and its university are about 25 minutes south.

A historic downtown theater from the 1920s, restored by a local foundation and now used for concerts, plays, classic films and community events. The marquee and vintage interior recall the golden age of small-town movie houses. Check the season schedule and buy tickets ahead for popular shows.
The historic brick courthouse of Greene County, at the center of downtown Paragould and surrounded by older commercial buildings. It is still in use for county business. Walk around the square to see its tower and details, and continue to nearby shops and cafes.
A historic brick Catholic church in Paragould, known for its Gothic-style windows and tall bell tower that stand out on the town skyline. It is an active parish, so be respectful during services. The exterior is easiest to view and photograph from the street outside.
The main downtown street of Paragould, lined with brick buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s that now hold shops, restaurants and offices. Murals and old storefronts make it a good short walk. Visit on a weekday or during a downtown event, when more shops are open.
A small historic gas station listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a rare surviving example of early roadside service station design in Arkansas. It is not a museum, so view it from the outside. Fans of old road architecture will enjoy a quick photo stop.
