Collierville is a historic town in Shelby County, Tennessee, about 30 miles east of downtown Memphis. Founded in the 1830s and largely burned during the Civil War, it was rebuilt around a shady town square that remains one of the best-preserved in the state and the heart of community life.
The Collierville Town Square is lined with antique stores, boutiques and restaurants around a park with a gazebo, and a restored train depot and vintage Frisco steam locomotive sit on the square's edge. The Morton Museum of Collierville History tells the town's story, and the Harrell Theatre presents community productions. Historic homes line the surrounding streets.
Outdoors, W.C. Johnson Park stretches along the Wolf River with trails and sports fields, Peterson Lake Nature Center protects bottomland forest, and the Wolf River Greenway links green spaces. Carriage Crossing offers open-air shopping, and Memphis's music landmarks are under an hour away.
The heart of Collierville, a tree-shaded square with a white gazebo and a small park surrounded by historic brick storefronts full of antique shops, boutiques and restaurants. It hosts concerts, markets and a famous Christmas celebration. Park on the side streets and stroll; evenings are especially pretty.
On the edge of the Town Square sit the town's restored railroad depot and a vintage St. Louis-San Francisco Railway steam locomotive with historic passenger cars, recalling the railroad that shaped Collierville. You can view the train up close from the square, and the depot and cars are a favorite for photos and holiday events.
A local history museum near the Town Square with exhibits on Collierville's founding, the Civil War and its rebuilding, farming, the railroad and daily life through the decades. Displays use photographs, artifacts and personal stories. It is small enough to see in an hour; check opening hours before you visit.
A community theater in Collierville presenting musicals, comedies, dramas and children's shows performed by local actors throughout the year. The intimate auditorium gives every seat a good view. Tickets are affordable; book ahead for popular musicals and holiday productions.
A large town park along the Wolf River with walking and biking trails, sports fields, playgrounds, a fishing pond and picnic pavilions. It connects to the Wolf River Greenway for longer rides. Popular with families on weekends; come early on spring weekends, when tournaments fill the parking.
A nature center protecting bottomland hardwood forest and wetlands along the Wolf River floodplain, with boardwalks and trails where you can spot turtles, herons and woodpeckers. It is a quiet retreat close to town. Bring bug spray in summer, and check opening hours, which are limited.
Collierville's section of the Wolf River Greenway, a paved multi-use trail following the river corridor and linking parks and neighborhoods. It is shaded in places and good for cycling, running or a family walk. Trailheads with parking are at W.C. Johnson Park and other points along the route.
An open-air lifestyle shopping center in Collierville with national stores, a large department store, restaurants and landscaped walkways. It is a pleasant place to shop and eat, especially in the holiday season when lights decorate the center. Parking is free and plentiful.
