About Pine Bluff

Pine Bluff grew up on a high bank of the Arkansas River where a French trader, Joseph Bonne, set up camp in 1819, and it still feels like the river and the railroad made it. The Cotton Belt line built its locomotive shops here, cotton money raised a downtown of brick banks and theaters, and the Union Army held the town against a Confederate attack in the 1863 Battle of Pine Bluff.

Today the best way in is through its stories. More than a dozen large murals on downtown walls tell the town's history, the Arkansas Railroad Museum guards the last steam engine built in the local shops, and the 1924 Saenger Theatre and the old Union Station depot recall busier days. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, a historically Black university founded in 1873, adds marching-band energy on fall Saturdays.

Outdoors, Pine Bluff Regional Park wraps around Lake Saracen and the Delta Rivers Nature Center, and Bayou Bartholomew, the longest bayou in the world, winds south through the Delta. Little Rock is under an hour away for a day trip.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November, when Delta heat and humidity ease.
Ideal stayOne full day for downtown, the museums and the regional park.
ArrivingAbout 45 miles southeast of Little Rock on I-530; the nearest major airport is Clinton National in Little Rock.
