Yucaipa is a foothill city of about 55,000 people in San Bernardino County, California, set at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains about 75 miles east of Los Angeles. Its name comes from a Serrano word often translated as wet or marshy land, and the valley was long home to Serrano people before Mexican-era ranchos, orchards and chicken ranches arrived. It became a city in 1989.
The Yucaipa Adobe, built around 1842, is one of the oldest houses in San Bernardino County and is now a small museum. The Mousley Museum of Natural History displays shells, minerals and fossils, and Yucaipa Regional Park has fishing lakes, summer water slides and campsites with mountain views.
Yucaipa is the gateway to Oak Glen, the apple-growing mountain community just above town, where orchards, bakeries and farms such as Riley's Farm and Los Rios Rancho draw crowds every fall. Hikers head for Wildwood Canyon State Park, the Oak Glen Preserve and the Zanja Peak trail in the Crafton Hills, and Big Bear and Redlands are both an easy drive away.
Best seasonSeptember to November for Oak Glen apple season and mild hiking weather; spring brings wildflowers.
Ideal stayOne day, or a weekend combined with Oak Glen and Redlands.
ArrivingOntario International Airport is about 40 minutes west; Yucaipa is just off Interstate 10 east of Redlands.
