About Real de Asientos

Real de Asientos is a small former mining town in the dry hills of northeastern Aguascalientes. Founded during the colonial era when silver and other metals were discovered in the area, it kept its stone streets, old churches and quiet plazas long after mining declined, and it is now one of Mexico's designated Pueblos Mágicos.

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Belén is the town's principal church, and its Pinacoteca Parroquial displays a collection of colonial religious paintings. The Ex-Convento del Señor del Tepozán and the Templo de Guadalupe are further stops, and the Panteón de Guadalupe cemetery is known for its carved stone tombs. The Museo del Minero recalls the hard life of the mines, and guided visits explore tunnels and hydraulic works beneath the town. A small train known as El Piojito carries visitors on short rides, and the Museo Plantas Cactáceas showcases desert plants. Casa Larrañaga and the Galerón de las Momias add local curiosities.

Real de Asientos suits curious travelers who enjoy history and offbeat small-town sights. It is usually visited as a day trip from the city of Aguascalientes, though staying overnight allows a quieter evening. Days are sunny for most of the year, and nights can turn cold.

Best seasonOctober to May is dry and sunny, though winter nights are chilly at this altitude.
Ideal stayA day trip is typical; an overnight allows a slower look at the churches and tunnels.
ArrivingMost visitors drive from the city of Aguascalientes, which has the nearest airport.
