About Aguascalientes

Aguascalientes is the capital of one of Mexico's smallest states, set on the high plains at the center of the country. Its name refers to the hot springs that drew early settlers, and the city grew as a stop on the colonial silver route and later as a major railway hub. Today it is a clean, orderly city with a compact historic core.

Plaza de la Patria is the heart of the city, flanked by the Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the Palacio de Gobierno, whose courtyards hold colorful murals on regional history. Teatro Morelos hosted the 1914 Revolutionary Convention. The Jardín de San Marcos and the Templo de San Marcos sit near the grounds of the famous San Marcos National Fair. In the Barrio del Encino, the Museo José Guadalupe Posada honors the engraver, born here, who created the skeletal Catrina. The Museo Nacional de la Muerte, the Museo de Aguascalientes and the Museo Espacio in the old railway workshops are further stops, alongside the Templo de Guadalupe.

Aguascalientes suits travelers interested in museums, festivals and Mexican popular art. The San Marcos fair, held in spring, is one of the country's largest, and Day of the Dead celebrations are also notable.
