About Mazamitla

Mazamitla is a mountain town in the Sierra del Tigre of southern Jalisco, surrounded by pine and oak forest at a cool altitude. Its whitewashed houses with wooden balconies and sloping tiled roofs have earned it the nickname "the Switzerland of Mexico," and it has become a favorite weekend retreat for families from Guadalajara looking for fresh air and log cabins.

The Parroquia de San Cristóbal, with its unusual pagoda-like towers, overlooks the Plaza Municipal José Parres Arias, where vendors sell local snacks and preserves in the evening. The Mercado Municipal is the place to try regional dishes, and the Mercado Artesanal sells woodwork, woven goods, and fruit liqueurs. Just outside town, the Los Cazos area leads to Cascada El Salto, a waterfall reached by a forest walk, and the Sierra del Tigre forest trails are popular for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Some visitors also continue to the nearby town of Valle de Juárez and its reservoir.

Mazamitla suits families, couples, and city dwellers wanting a cabin stay among the pines. Weekends and holidays are lively, so weekdays are calmer. Nights can be cold in winter, and summer rains keep the forest green. Ajijic and Lake Chapala are within driving distance for those combining mountain and lake.

Best seasonOctober to March for crisp, clear weather; summer brings rain and the greenest forests.
Ideal stayTwo or three nights in a cabin is the typical rhythm for a visit.
ArrivingMost visitors drive from Guadalajara, whose international airport is the nearest major gateway.
