About Mineral de Pozos

Mineral de Pozos is a former mining town in the high desert of northeastern Guanajuato, not far from San Miguel de Allende. It thrived on silver and other minerals in the colonial era and again around the turn of the twentieth century, then emptied out when mining collapsed, leaving roofless haciendas and stone chimneys across the landscape. Now a Pueblo Mágico, it is slowly reviving with galleries, guesthouses, and artisans.

In town, the Parroquia de San Pedro Apóstol faces a quiet garden, and the Plaza del Minero honors the miners who built the town's fortunes. The Museo de Historia explains the mining boom and bust, while the Escuela Modelo, a grand early twentieth-century school building, reflects that later prosperity. The real draw lies on the edges of town, where the ruins of Hacienda Mina Cinco Señores, Hacienda San Baldomero, and Hacienda El Triángulo stand among cactus and scrub, their furnaces and shafts open to exploration. The Centenario Mine can be visited with a guide. Lavender fields at Rancho de Lavanda offer a fragrant contrast, and Mezcal Cuanax produces mezcal in the area. Local workshops also make reproductions of pre-Hispanic musical instruments.

Pozos suits photographers, history lovers, and travelers seeking silence. Walking among the ruins requires sturdy shoes and caution around old shafts.

Best seasonOctober to April for mild, dry days; summer brings afternoon storms to the high desert.
Ideal stayOne or two days covers the town, the hacienda ruins and a lavender farm.
ArrivingMost visitors drive from San Miguel de Allende or Querétaro; the nearest airports are Querétaro and the Bajío.
