About San Juan del Río

San Juan del Río is the second-largest city in the state of Querétaro, set on the high central plateau along the historic Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the colonial route that linked Mexico City with the north. Its long role as a trading stop shows in its stone bridge, churches and old inns, though today it is also a busy industrial and commercial city.

The Puente de la Historia, an eighteenth-century stone bridge over the San Juan River, is the town's emblem. From there, a walk through the center leads to the Parroquia de San Juan Bautista, the Santuario de Guadalupe, the Templo y Exconvento de Santo Domingo and the Templo del Señor del Sacromonte. The Museo de la Muerte, set in a former cemetery, explores Mexican attitudes toward death. Just outside the city, the Zona Arqueológica La Cruz preserves pre-Hispanic remains, and the area's opal jewelers and stone carvers are a local specialty.

San Juan del Río is a practical stop rather than a destination for long stays. It suits travelers on the road between Mexico City and Querétaro who want a few hours of history. Hacienda La Llave and the spa town of Tequisquiapan, with its thermal pools and wine route, are close by.

Best seasonOctober to May brings dry, sunny weather well suited to walking the center.
Ideal stayHalf a day to one day, ideally combined with Tequisquiapan.
ArrivingThe city sits on Highway 57; Querétaro's airport is the nearest air gateway.
