About Calvillo

Calvillo is a small town in the western valleys of Aguascalientes, surrounded by low mountains and orchards. It is known across Mexico for guavas, grown in large quantities in the area, and for fine deshilado, a traditional drawn-thread embroidery. The town's relaxed pace and warm climate make it a favorite weekend escape from the state capital.

The Plaza Principal faces the Parroquia del Señor del Salitre, whose large, ornately decorated dome is the town's landmark, and the Santuario de Guadalupe looks out from higher ground. The Museo Nacional de los Pueblos Mágicos highlights Mexico's designated heritage towns, and a guava factory tour shows how the fruit becomes sweets, preserves and drinks. Outside the center, the Presa de Malpaso reservoir offers water views and lakeside food, and the old haciendas of Calvillo recall the region's agricultural past. Hikers head into the Sierra Fría and Sierra del Laurel, and the El Tepozán cave paintings reveal much older inhabitants.

Calvillo suits travelers looking for food, handicrafts and easy outdoor outings rather than big-city sights. A temazcal steam bath is a popular way to unwind. Guava harvest season brings festivities to town, and the dry months are pleasant for exploring the mountains.

Best seasonOctober to May brings dry, mild weather; the guava harvest is celebrated in late fall and winter.
Ideal stayOne to two days covers the town, a guava tour and the reservoir.
ArrivingMost visitors drive west from the city of Aguascalientes, which has the nearest airport.
