About Pátzcuaro

Pátzcuaro is a highland town near the shores of Lake Pátzcuaro, at the heart of the Purépecha region of Michoacán. Its streets of whitewashed adobe with red-painted bases and tiled roofs have kept a distinctly indigenous and colonial character, shaped in part by the sixteenth-century bishop Vasco de Quiroga, who encouraged each surrounding village to develop its own craft.

Life centers on two plazas: the broad Plaza Vasco de Quiroga, framed by mansions, and the busier Plaza Gertrudis Bocanegra, with its market stalls. The adjacent Biblioteca Gertrudis Bocanegra, in a former church, holds a large Juan O'Gorman mural on regional history. The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud draws pilgrims, while the Casa de los Once Patios is filled with workshops selling lacquerware and textiles. The Museo de Artes e Industrias Populares and the Templo de la Compañía add more history. Boats cross the lake to the island of Janitzio, and the archaeological site of Tzintzuntzan and the coppersmiths of Santa Clara del Cobre are short drives away.

Pátzcuaro suits travelers interested in crafts, indigenous culture and slow evenings in cool mountain air. Day of the Dead brings famous candlelit observances around the lake and large crowds, so book far ahead.

Best seasonOctober to April is dry; Day of the Dead in early November is the most celebrated time.
Ideal stayThree days covers the town, Janitzio, Tzintzuntzan and Santa Clara del Cobre.
ArrivingMost visitors fly into Morelia and continue by road or bus to Pátzcuaro.
