About Ajijic

Ajijic is a lakeside town on the northern shore of Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest freshwater lake, a short drive south of Guadalajara. Its mild climate and artistic atmosphere have long attracted painters, writers and retirees from the United States and Canada, creating a blend of local tradition and international community. Cobbled streets, colorful murals and mountain views define the town.

The Plaza Principal, with its kiosk, is the social center, overlooked by the Parroquia de San Andrés Apóstol. The Centro Cultural hosts exhibitions and classes, and the Ajijic Museo de Arte adds rotating shows by regional artists. Murals and cobbled streets reward slow wandering, with many walls painted with scenes of local life and legend. The Malecón de Ajijic follows the lakeshore with walking paths, sculptures and views across the water. For more active outings, the trail to El Tepalo leads up into the hills to a seasonal waterfall.

A gentle pace, good food and a strong arts scene keep many visitors coming back. The Lake Chapala Farmers Market draws locals and expats alike, while local craft breweries and gardens and gallery walks add to the relaxed lifestyle. The weather is pleasant year-round, though the rainy season brings afternoon showers in summer.

Best seasonOctober through May for dry, sunny days; summer rains turn the hills green.
Ideal stayThree to five days, or longer for those exploring the lakeshore towns.
ArrivingGuadalajara International Airport lies between the city and the lake, a short drive from Ajijic.
