About Tapalpa

Tapalpa is a mountain village in the Sierra de Tapalpa, southwest of Guadalajara, surrounded by pine forest, meadows, and dairy farms. With its white adobe houses, wooden balconies, and red-tiled roofs, it was among the first towns in Jalisco named a Pueblo Mágico. Cool air and a rural setting make it a popular escape from the city.

The village has several historic churches, including the Templo La Merced, the older Templo de San Antonio, and Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. The Pila de las Culebras, an old public fountain, is a central landmark, and the Parque de las Esculturas displays art in an open setting. At the Mercado Municipal, stalls serve regional food and sweets, including the local rompope and borregos made of sugar paste. Outside town, Las Piedrotas is a valley scattered with enormous boulders where visitors picnic and ride horses, and the Salto del Nogal waterfall drops dramatically into a forested canyon at the end of a hiking trail. Parque Aventuras La Ceja offers zip lines and other activities, and the ruins of an old paper factory recall the area's industrial past.

Tapalpa suits families, couples, and hikers seeking a cabin weekend. Weekends draw many visitors from Guadalajara, so weekdays are calmer. Winter nights are cold, and the rainy summer fills the waterfalls.

Best seasonOctober to March for clear, cool days; July to September for full waterfalls and green meadows.
Ideal stayTwo nights is ideal for the village, Las Piedrotas and a waterfall hike.
ArrivingMost visitors drive from Guadalajara, whose international airport is the nearest major gateway.
