About Port Charlotte

Port Charlotte is a community of about 60,000 people on the northwest shore of Charlotte Harbor in southwest Florida, between Sarasota and Fort Myers. It was laid out in the 1950s by the General Development Corporation as a planned retirement and vacation community, with hundreds of miles of canals that give many homes direct access to the harbor and the Gulf of Mexico.

Today it is a relaxed, largely residential town popular with retirees, boaters and anglers. Charlotte Harbor is one of Florida's largest estuaries, famous for tarpon, snook and redfish, and the area's mangrove shorelines and pine flatwoods shelter dolphins, manatees, ospreys and Florida scrub-jays.

Visitors come for spring training baseball at Charlotte Sports Park, kayaking and hiking at Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park, harbor views at Port Charlotte Beach Park and nature walks at Tippecanoe Environmental Park. Historic Punta Gorda is just across the Peace River, and the Gulf beaches of Englewood, Boca Grande and Venice are within about 30 to 45 minutes.

Best seasonNovember to April for dry, mild weather and spring training; summer is hot with afternoon storms.
Ideal stayTwo to four days for fishing, paddling and nearby Gulf beaches.
ArrivingPunta Gorda Airport is about 15 minutes away; Southwest Florida International in Fort Myers is about 45 minutes south.
