Apopka is a fast-growing city about 15 miles northwest of downtown Orlando, nicknamed the Indoor Foliage Capital of the World for the many nurseries that grow houseplants here. Its historic core around the old railroad depot and brick streets recalls its days as a citrus, lumber and farming town.
Apopka is a gateway to some of Central Florida's best natural springs. Wekiwa Springs State Park, at the city's edge, has a spring-fed swimming area and canoe trails along the Wekiva River, and Kelly Park is famous for tubing down the crystal-clear Rock Springs run. To the south, Lake Apopka's restored marshes host one of the best birding drives in Florida.
The West Orange Trail passes through town for cycling and walking, the Museum of the Apopkans tells local history, and the Apopka Amphitheater hosts concerts. Orlando's theme parks are within about 40 minutes, making Apopka a natural base for exploring both springs and city.
A canoe and kayak outfitter at the head of Rock Springs Run, where clear, spring-fed water winds through dense subtropical forest on its way to the Wekiva River. Paddle the run for a few hours and look for turtles, otters and wading birds. Reserve boats ahead on weekends; it closes when full.
An Orange County park where Rock Springs bubbles out of a limestone cave, creating a cool, clear run perfect for floating on an inner tube through shady woods. There are also picnic areas, a campground and trails. Summer weekends fill up early, so arrive before opening; bring your own tube.
An 11-mile one-way scenic drive through the restored marshes of the Lake Apopka North Shore, one of the top birding spots in Florida, with hundreds of species recorded plus alligators, otters and bobcats. It is open Fridays, weekends and federal holidays only; allow two hours and bring binoculars.
A vast area of restored wetlands on the north side of Florida's fourth-largest lake, with hiking and biking trails, levee paths and open views across the marsh. It is popular with birdwatchers and photographers, especially in winter. Paths are exposed, so bring water, a hat and insect repellent.
A long paved rail trail running through Apopka on its way across western Orange County, popular for cycling, running, skating and walking. The Apopka section passes neighborhoods, woods and the historic downtown. Bike rentals are available nearby, and trailheads have parking, water and restrooms.
A small local history museum telling the story of Apopka, from Native American settlement and early pioneers to citrus groves, the lumber trade, fern and foliage nurseries and the railroad. Displays include photographs, tools and household items. Check its limited opening hours before visiting.

An outdoor amphitheater at the city's Northwest Recreation Complex, hosting concerts, festivals and community events through the year, with lawn seating under the Florida sky. Bring a blanket or low chair, and check the city's events calendar for upcoming shows and ticket details.
