About Lakeland

Lakeland is a city of about 115,000 people in central Florida, halfway between Tampa and Orlando, and true to its name it has dozens of lakes within the city limits. Its historic downtown, Munn Park and lakeside promenades give it a classic small-city charm, and graceful swans glide on Lake Morton, a city tradition since the 1950s.

Lake Mirror is the jewel of downtown, ringed by a 1920s Classical Revival promenade with balustrades, a loggia and lawns that host concerts and festivals. The Munn Park Historic District has brick streets, the old City Hall and restaurants and shops. Florida Southern College holds the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world, and the Polk Museum of Art sits nearby.

Lakeland is also home to Florida Polytechnic University, whose futuristic main building was designed by Santiago Calatrava. The Lake-to-Lake Bikeway links several lakes on a paved trail, the Silver Moon Drive-In still shows movies under the stars, and the Detroit Tigers hold spring training here every year.

Best seasonNovember to April for mild weather, outdoor festivals and Tigers spring training.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, the lakes and the Frank Lloyd Wright campus.
ArrivingTampa International Airport is about 45 miles west, and Amtrak stops at Lakeland station downtown.
